Poppy Smith – Featured Woman
Poppy, a British-born globetrotter has lived all over the world. Her father was in the Royal Air Force and loved living in other cultures. She has lived in England, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Kenya, where I met her American husband, Jim.
Poppy is an author and former BSF teaching leader with a Masters in Spiritual Formation. She’s an inspirational speaker, award-winning author, Christian life coach. She encourages and inspires audiences nationally and globally.
In her words:
“Women around the world face circumstances that produce discouragement …
and cause them to cry out to God for help. I’ve ministered in over 20 countries and seen struggling women find hope and strength to persevere in their faith as they draw nearer to Christ.
God’s Word is alive and active and is healing women …
spiritually, emotionally, and personally on every continent. My passion is that women experience God’s acceptance in spite of their failures, and embrace His power to change their lives.”
Her book, Go For It!: Make Your Life Count For God * $9.99 on Amazon inspires women to thrive to their best.
You’ll never meet another woman as gracious, tender-hearted and committed to seeing women succeed at being women!
1) What exactly is your business and what made you get started?
I am an inspirational Bible teacher, an author, and seminary trained spiritual director. All those fancy titles mean I’m passionate about pointing out God’s reality in our lives—and it all began with attending a Bible Study Fellowship class when I was a spiritual and emotional mess.
2) What one thing do you do every day to move yourself forward and stay focused? Where do you find your inspiration?
I stay focused and renewed by reading the Bible and various devotional books, plus I journal most mornings. What I read, inspires me to persevere in living out my passion.
3) What do you do regularly to take care of yourself?
I’m diabetic so I take exercise seriously. I try to work out at the gym 4-5 times a week. I also take a nap if I need it without feeling guilty. Another way I destress is watching British mysteries and dramas—loved Downton Abbey!
4) How do you keep yourself emotionally balanced while you are pushing forward?
I ask myself how I’m feeling. If I feel down in some way, I ask more questions: where is it coming from? What am I telling myself? What truth do I need to rehearse to overcome negative feelings?
I talk to God, asking for insight and wisdom.
5) What’s the best part and the worst part of your job?
The best part is being invited to speak to women and encourage them in whatever they are facing.
The worst part is the mental, physical, and spiritual energy required to be ready for each event.
6) What failure taught you the most and what was it?
When I was writing my third book I was assigned an editor who worked with some top Christian authors. He wouldn’t return my emails or phone calls. I felt dismissed and insignificant and didn’t write again for ten years. I learned I need to persevere and always do what God’s calling me to do.
7) If you had to do something different, what would that be?
Understand that my gifts and calling are from God and that how I’m treated should not determine my reaction. If I had to do something else I’d be an interior designer.
8) If you had advice to give to someone else who was thinking of becoming an entrepreneur, what would that be?
Be sure your motives are right. Learn the skills you need. Dream, risk, move forward and be amazed!
9) What did you have to overcome personally to be able to do what you do?
Fear. Inner messages of inadequacy. Words of discouragement from others. Poor techy skills.
10) Any last parting words?
My most recent release is titled, Go For It! Make Your Life Count for God. I wrote it to motivate women to live with purpose and fulfillment and not waste their one life. I hope your readers are ignited by God to do just that.
