Collettey’s Cookies – Featured Woman
She’s a warrior woman! My Inspiration. I love an underdog story. The world told her ‘No’ and she said, “Watch me!” I heard the Rocky theme song playing in the background the moment I saw Collettey’s story on Facebook.
So I took a chance and ordered her cookies ( http://www.colletteys.com/place-your-order.html ) to see what all the fuss was about! They promptly arrived and I sat down to enjoy one of them…that was my mistake…I ate 6 of them!!!! They ARE SPECTACULAR! She claims her cookies are the best because they’re made with love and cinnamon! I can definitely taste the LOVE!
Since 2011, Collette, a young woman with Down Syndrome, has been creating her own recipe for cookies for fun! But after rejection over and over again when applying for a job and being told she had great skills but was not “a good fit” she was determined to own her own business, despite any disability, and show people how able she is. Collette was not only determined to show everyone how capable people with (dis) abilities are, but her mission is to open production facilities across the country and employ thousands of different abilities ! ONLY 17.5% of the population of people with disabilities were employed in 2015.
Collette’s plan moving forward, is to increase production and build her professional team in Boston as Phase I. Which she has started! Collette is already in discussion to replicate this first phase across the country in different states, so she can offer employment to thousands of people with different abilities. This is one strong, young lady!
With an inspired heart and tears in my eyes, I say to other women afraid to try–No More Excuses!– and to Collette I say, “You Rock Young Lady, You Rock!”
1) What exactly is your business and what made you get started?
I always loved baking. I would bake for my family all the time and when I came up with the Amazing Cookie everyone who tried it said I should start selling it. So I started selling it and decided to open up my own small cookie company.
2) What one thing do you do every day to move yourself forward and stay focused? Where do you find your inspiration?
Everyday I wake up really excited to go to work. I am excited to show and inspire people to not give up on their dreams because they can achieve anything.
3) What do you do regularly to take care of yourself?
I spend a lot of time with my family, my mom and my sister. We love hanging out, exercising and taking little weekend getaways to escape the city sometimes.
4) How do you keep yourself emotionally balanced while you are pushing forward?
I have a great support system. I can get really stressed sometimes but with my mom and sister, we all are able to take breaks away from it and destress.
5) What’s the best part and the worst part of your job?
The best part of my job is that I absolutely love baking and that I can show people my ability. I love being my own boss because no one can tell me no or that I’m not a good fit. The worst part is probably all the crazy hours right now. I am so busy!
6) What failure taught you the most and what was it?
Failure taught me to not give up. There will always be people who doubt you or tell you that you can’t do something, but don’t listen to them.
7) If you had to do something different, what would that be?
If I had to do something different I don’t think I would. I love everything about where I am right now.
8) If you had advice to give to someone else who was thinking of becoming an entrepreneur, what would that be?
I would tell them to not give up. Have a great support system around you and make sure you absolutely love what you do.
9) What did you have to overcome personally to be able to do what you do?
I had to overcome a lot of struggles and people telling me no. People would look at me and see my disability instead of seeing what I can do.
10) Any last parting words?
I just want to thank everyone for their support and their love. It has been really amazing!
