Julie Allen – Women’s Online Clothing Boutique

Too often Julie experienced, and heard others, talk about crying in the dressing room. Her goal is to carry pieces that help women feel just as beautiful as they truly are. She believes all women, all bodies are beautiful and deserve to walk with confidence. She started Mary Rose NW Boutique. She’s a mom to a toddler boy and her shop is based out of Portland, OR. She recognizes the need for a clothing boutique that focuses on body positivity and helping women feel confident in their clothes.

watch 1) What exactly is your business and what inspired you?
I founded Mary Rose NW Boutique. Mary Rose is an online women’s clothing boutique with a focus on body positivity and self-love/compassion. My mission is to help women of all sizes and shapes feel confident in their clothes and truly believe in themselves.

I take time every day to reflect on my goals. To look inside myself and truly know what I am hoping to accomplish with my boutique. I know what it is like to feel bad about your body and I want to inspire women everywhere to take back their control and love the skin they are in. My toddler son and 7-year-old stepdaughter inspire me to keep pushing forward. I want them to know they can believe in themselves and accomplish their goals.

Exercise. I know myself well enough now to know that I need to take the time to exercise most days of the week. It helps me work through my anxiety and frustrations.

4) How do you keep yourself emotionally balanced while you are pushing forward?
Is wine an ok answer? Ha…in all seriousness, I rely a lot on my husband for support. He’s been amazing in supporting my boutique. He’ll gladly watch our son while I go work and that has been a huge help. Other than that, it’s been making myself a priority every day. Sometimes that’s as simple as a hot shower by myself, other days, it’s a glass of wine, and still other days it’s treating myself to a manicure. All about balance.

5) What’s the best part and the worst part of your job?
Best part . . . , staying at home with my son. And let’s be honest, I am too stubborn to work for anyone but myself. I like being my own boss and doing everything on my terms. The worst part is that my work is never done; I always feel like I should be doing more.

6) What failure taught you the most and what was it?
There was one time I was set to host an open-house and nobody came. I mean, nobody. Let’s just say that was a hard thing to swallow. I immediately felt like a huge failure and wanted nothing more than to bury my head in the sand. BUT, I knew I couldn’t and wouldn’t. I learned I needed to be more proactive in my marketing and to truly be proud of the clothes I am carrying in my boutique. It worked 🙂

7) If you had to do something different, what would that be?

Honestly, I would have had more confidence and belief in myself from the get-go. I personally have spent a lot of time doubting and criticizing myself. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself “I am strong, I am beautiful, I am enough.”

8) If you had advice to give to someone else who was thinking of becoming an entrepreneur, what would that be?
Believe in yourself! Never be ashamed of who you are or your product. You have worked hard and deserve to be rewarded.

9) What did you have to overcome personally to be able to do what you do?
Lots of self-doubt and criticism. I hate to admit it, but I have always been that girl who didn’t believe in herself, who told herself very hurtful things . . . starting this business has made me truly realize how strong of a woman I am.

10) Any last parting words?
Please, ladies . . . , you are strong, you are beautiful, you are enough. My mission is to help you feel beautiful and confident; You deserve it. You truly deserve it.
